In Short:

  • Following a 14-year hiatus, Fallout: New Vegas narrative architect John Gonzalez has rejoined Obsidian Entertainment, now helming a creative director role for an unannounced venture
  • Gonzalez was quick to set the record straight, stating that he is not involved in developing a Fallout: New Vegas sequel

While celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, Fallout: New Vegas remains the crowning achievement of the series for many fans.

Created by Obsidian Entertainment rather than Bethesda, Fallout: New Vegas is widely regarded as the standout game in the series, thanks to its exceptional storytelling, immersive and brutal world.

Lead writer John Gonzalez, one of the key figures behind Fallout: New Vegas’ success, left Obsidian in 2011, just after the launch of the game.

Not only did Gonzalez help create the main quest for Fallout: New Vegas, but he also wrote most of the dialogue, introduced memorable characters like Mr. House, Benny, and Yes-Man, and contributed to some of the game’s best side quests, such as Come Fly With Me.

Gonzalez was quick to quash any speculation about working on a Fallout: New Vegas sequel, even including a playful nod to excited fans in the experience section of his LinkedIn profile.

Here, Gonzalez casually mentions he’s back at Obsidian for “exciting times,” but quickly adds, “No, it’s not FNV2.”

Obsidian just indicated a willingness to return to the Pillars of Eternity universe, whether that involves a tactical spin-off or a third game in the series, as long as the right circumstances align.

Well, this might be a more modest project, like Pentiment or Grounded. We won’t know exactly what Gonzalez is working on until Obsidian reveals it, though many fans are probably hoping it’s something related to Fallout.
