U.S. Government Adds Prominent Anime Piracy Site to Its ‘Notorious’ Streaming List

In Short:

  • HiAnime.to Outpaces Disney+ and Crunchyroll in Monthly Visitor Numbers
  • HiAnime to Included in U.S. Government’s Notorious Markets for Piracy List
  • The website’s future is unknown as piracy continues to undermine legal streaming services

The U.S. government takes piracy seriously, recently adding a major anime streaming site to its notorious list. Anime faces a particular issue with piracy, as many fans are hesitant to pay for legal subscriptions.

HiAnime.to, a well-known piracy site, has been added to the NML list and now attracts more monthly visitors than large streaming platforms such as Disney+ and Crunchyroll.

HiAnime.to has been gaining significant attention lately, thanks to its massive visitor count. The site has now surpassed popular legal streaming platforms such as Disney+ and Crunchyroll in terms of monthly traffic.

HiAnime.to has been attracting roughly three times as many visitors as Crunchyroll. In recent months, its monthly visitor count has consistently exceeded 300 million.

HiAnime.to was included in the USTR’s 2024 report, which highlights the Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy (NML). This places the anime piracy site on the United States’ official list of notorious streaming platforms.

Having a site placed on the USTR’s NML is a significant action, as it targets websites that infringe on copyrights or partake.

HiAnime is believed to have followed in the footsteps of Aniwatch, which was a rebranding of Zoro.to.site. All of these sites were shut down due to piracy.

Given the overwhelming negative attention, it’s possible that HiAnime.to could be taken down. However, if that happens, it’s likely that the site will reappear under a different name. Alternatively, another anime streaming site could rise to take its place as the largest.

Piracy happens to be a major concern, as it undermines the revenue of many people within the industry. That said, it’s uncertain whether the demand for illegal streaming will ever diminish.

As long as there’s interest, illegal streaming platforms will likely keep appearing, regardless of efforts to shut them down.
