Jujutsu Kaisen: Gege Sheds Light On Sukuna’s Link to Wasuke Itadori

In Short:

  • Gege explains that Sukuna is tied to Wasuke Itadori, not Jin
  • The idea of Sukuna being Wasuke’s grandnephew aligns well with their noticeable similarities.
  • Yuji’s powers remain unaffected by the change; he continues to harness his potential and triumph over Sukuna

Jujutsu Kaisen’s final volume recently debuted, delivering plenty of exciting content to fans before the series concluded. The highlight was a 16-page epilogue that explored the lives of various characters and provided fans with a wealth of intriguing new revelations.

Chapter volumes typically feature polished artwork and sometimes revised paneling. Fans also get to read the author’s notes and thoughts on different events. One such note has completely altered the way fans view the relationship between Yuji Itadori and Sukuna.

The Shinjuku Showdown arc in JJK finally revealed the bond between Yuji Itadori and Sukuna to the fans. During their clash, it was disclosed that Sukuna was actually born as a twin.

Sukuna consumed his twin just when she was not born, which explains his strange appearance. He was cursed from the beginning but also had to fight for survival. It was later revealed that Sukuna’s twin was reincarnated as Jin Itadori, Yuji’s father.

The above effectively made Sukuna Yuji’s uncle, a notion that fans accepted until quite recently

In the final part of the series, the relationship between Sukuna and Yuji became even more fascinating. It helped explain Sukuna’s strong interest in Yuji and also revealed why Yuji held such immense potential, one that could challenge Sukuna’s power.

Uraume revealed that Sukuna’s connection to Yuji as his uncle and the fact that he once resided in his body means Yuji holds the same potential as Sukuna, which was an exciting twist for fans. Their relationship has now officially evolved.

It now seems there was an error in the weekly chapters, which has been addressed in the volume release. The volume version of JJK clarifies that Jin Itadori is not Sukuna’s reincarnated twin.

Gege finally added his own notes to the JJK chapters, where he confirmed a surprising fact that caught many fans off guard. Until then, most fans had assumed Yuji was in fact the nephew of Sukuna.

Gege explained that Sukuna’s reincarnated twin was not Jin Itadori, but Wasuke Itadori. Wasuke, Yuji’s grandfather, appeared early in the series. It’s interesting to note that once Wasuke left Yuji’s life, Sukuna essentially took his place.

The above feedback s seems quite logical than Sukuna has been directly linked to Jin, a character with minimal relevance in the broader JJK plot. At the same time, it completely reshapes the relationship between Yuji and Sukuna.

Here Sukuna and Wasuke were brothers, with Sukuna eventually consuming him. Sukuna then reincarnated as Yuji’s grandfather many centuries later, leading to the birth of Jin Itadori. Jin is actually Sukuna’s nephew, while Sukuna is Yuji’s granduncle, making their relationship far more complicated.

Sukuna’s connection to Wasuke is much more logical, as their relationship makes far more sense than any other.

Wasuke shared a striking resemblance to Sukuna, and fans sensed there was a deeper connection between them. At the same time, Wasuke played a far more significant role in Yuji’s life, teaching him the values of love and helping others—values that contrasted sharply with Sukuna’s nature.

Both Sukuna and him seem to be their polar opposites. While one dismissed love and followed a destructive path, the other welcomed it and made every effort to assist others. In the end, it was Wasuke’s love that ultimately overcame Sukuna.

Well, it’s quite a significant error for the author to make. The revelation that Wasuke is Sukuna’s reincarnated brother is not a minor detail that can just be corrected in the volume version without raising questions.

It’s a clear mistake done by the author. Fortunately, JJK’s final saga emphasized the battles so heavily that the lore became less significant in the grand scheme of things. Lastly, Yuji’s victory over Sukuna made the details of Sukuna’s connections less significant.

The author actually made a significant retcon, as Sukuna had earlier mentioned that it was his reincarnated brother with whom Kenjaku had children. Yet, as fans know, Kenjaku had children with Jin, not Wasuke, adding even more confusion to the story.

In the larger perspective, the revelation that Wasuke is Sukuna’s reincarnated brother doesn’t have much impact. If their relationship had been explored further in the story, this change would have been much more substantial.

In terms of the relationship, it carries little weight because Wasuke’s role in JJK is limited. Also, his connection to Sukuna isn’t deeply explored. It’s primarily used to link Yuji and Sukuna, and it fulfills that role well. Even if Jin were Sukuna’s reincarnated brother, it wouldn’t have changed much.

If JJK comes forth in the future, fans are expected to check a flashback to Sukuna’s time in the Heian era, offering more insight into his reincarnated twin. Alternatively, there could be a look into Wasuke’s life before his death at the beginning of the series.
