Dexter: Original Sin- Episode 6 Review & Analysis

In Short:

  • By combining thrilling moments with humor, the episode keeps viewers both excited and amused throughout
  • The double date between Dexter and Debra brings plenty of laughs, offering a glimpse into a more humorous side of Dexter’s character
  • While the new supporting characters require more depth, Patrick Dempsey excels in his role as Aaron Spencer

In Dexter: Original Sin’s sixth episode, Dexter pursues the ‘kill’ that will define him as a serial killer, while Aaron Spencer, head of Miami Metro Homicide, faces the traumatic ordeal of his son being kidnapped.

In the 70s flashbacks, Debra Morgan is born, Harry’s affair with Laura Moser deepens, and the undercover operation aimed at taking down the cartel takes a surprising and dramatic turn.

Directed by Michael Lehmann and written by Terry Huang, The Joy of Killing aired on Paramount+ with Showtime on January 10, 2025.

The episode strikes a balance between dark, twisted moments and brief flashes of humor, while also revisiting the central plot with ominous implications for the future.

After last week’s shift away from the main case of Miami Metro Homicide, the second half of Original Sin’s first season starts with a tense sequence, where Aaron Spencer’s young son is abducted.

The villain’s true identity is concealed from both the characters and the audience, adding an engaging mystery that sets this storyline apart from anything in the Dexter universe before.

The episode begins with a somber mood, but Patrick Gibson’s impressive performance as Dexter Morgan lightens the tone with well-timed humor.

By now, he has firmly established himself as the definitive Dexter, embodying the serial killer with a code.

The double date featuring Dexter, Sofia, Debra, and Gio is one of the prequel’s funniest scenes. Much of the humor revolves around Dexter’s constant craving for food.

It’s enjoyable to see a more relaxed side of the character, and Gibson skillfully balances these comedic moments with the darker facets of Dexter’s personality.

With every murder, Dexter fine-tunes his execution of Harry’s code. However, it’s the mistakes he makes in handling the aftermath that add an extra layer of tension to these scenes, making them feel distinct from the uninterrupted series.

In this episode, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character, Tanya Martin, has very little screen time, but it seems the show is holding her back for a major, dramatic arc. Bobby Watt, though not fully developed in the 90s timeline, has a more prominent role in the 1970s segment.

The second half of the season should offer more for these characters, as a good prequel introduces engaging new ones to elevate the stakes, compensating for less focus on the well-known characters.

While Masuka and Batista don’t play significant roles here, the audience’s awareness of their future arcs makes it less concerning, especially with the possibility of additional seasons down the line.

This week, Aaron Spencer, portrayed by Patrick Dempsey, takes a more central role in the story, with his personal involvement in the kidnapping case driving the plot forward. It allows Dempsey to display a broader range of his acting abilities.

Aaron Spencer, who wasn’t introduced in the original series, adds a sense of unpredictability to Original Sin, keeping viewers intrigued about his arc as the season continues.

This episode strengthens his relationship with Harry Morgan, with the two sharing a drink in Spencer’s office. However, a notable issue arises as Spencer plays a role in investigating his own son’s disappearance, raising questions about his impartiality.
