Arcane

This year’s Best Adaptation category at the TGAs was a tightly contested race, primarily between Arcane Season 2 and Fallout. Both series had strong merits backing them.

Arcane, often hailed as one of the finest animated shows ever, earned a flawless Rotten Tomatoes score for its second season.

Arcane’s second and final season had high expectations, especially after its success in previous years, making this its last opportunity for recognition at The Game Awards.

On the other hand, Fallout, which brought Bethesda’s iconic post-apocalyptic series to life, gained significant attention and praise on Prime Video from both critics and fans.

A notable connection between the two series was Ella Purnell, the lead actress, who attended the ceremony.

The Best Adaptation award was revealed later in the evening at The Game Awards 2024, with Shannon Woodward from The Last of Us: Part 2 and Isabela Merced from The Last of Us Season 2 presenting the honor.

Ultimately, Fallout triumphed, with lead actress Ella Purnell and producers Todd Howard and Jonathan Nolan taking the stage to receive the felicitation.

Upon receiving the award, Nolan jokingly said, “I spent a lot of the evening coming up with ways to tease Ella if she won for Arcane.”

He then thanked the writers, cast, crew, and studio behind Fallout, before adding with a grin, “And a big thanks to the Fallout: New Vegas fans for not setting my house on fire. You’ll be happy you refrained.

The win sparked a divide among fans. Some were thrilled with Fallout’s success, hailing it as a fantastic adaptation of the Bethesda franchise, while others were left disappointed by Arcane’s defeat.

With Arcane wrapping up its final episodes on November 23, it was still in the midst of airing during the voting period for The Game Awards. While the season provided closure for many viewers, some criticized the pacing of the 2nd season.

The timing of Arcane‘s release likely affected its chances at The Game Awards, but it still helped make the category exceptionally competitive this year.

Fallout

The Fallout series is a post-apocalyptic RPG originally developed by Black Isle Studios under Interplay Entertainment, before Bethesda Softworks took control of the franchise in 2004. Set in a retrofuturistic universe, the games explore the consequences of a nuclear war that has left the world in ruins.

The Fallout franchise typically follows a Vault Dweller, a person who spent time in a secure underground shelter and now ventures into the ruined world to solve various problems.

The entire series initially leaned more toward tactical RPGs, but Fallout 3 shifted the direction to a first-person shooter, incorporating the classic RPG features into its gameplay.
